The level of artistry and creativity in today’s world of cake decorating is utterly amazing. It’s an exciting time for the sugar arts! Here are some of the most outstanding designs trending now.

Tapestry
Needle crafting, embroidery in particular, is popular again so it makes sense that the trend would find its way to cake decorating. Cake artist Leslie Vigil incorporates this trend spectacularly in her vibrantly tinted buttercream tapestry cakes that are a marvel of intricate piping work.

Secret Garden
Piped buttercream blossoms are a staple of cake decorating, but Russian baker Yulia Kedyarova @Yulia.Kedyarova takes this mainstay to a new level with her stunning nature-themed cakes that feature simple icing on the outside and a riot of impeccably piped flora on the inside.

Fault Lines
It used to be that a crack in your cake was a mishap, but these cakes are all about the break! In this playful trend, horizontal crevices are filled with an array of edibles. Some cakes feature colorful sprinkles, others use berries, frosting, and even macaron cookies to highlight the fault lines. This stunning black frosted cake from Toronto baker Lindsay, The Flour Girl @theflourgirl_ is a dramatic example of the sprinkles technique. The luscious-looking strawberry fault line cake is from Sugar Geek Show @sugargeekshow .

Geodes
This decorating style typically features cakes that are inset with colored rock candy made from isomalt to simulate the crystals inside of a geode. The look is dramatic and surprisingly, not too difficult to create. Custom cake shop, De La Crème Creative Studio @delacremestudio in St. Louis, Missouri produces some lovely examples of this enduring trend. The geode cake from Brookes Sweets and Treats @brookessweetsandtreats achieves a similar look with the use of fresh pomegranate seeds.

Gravity-Defying
The anti-gravity style cake is certainly a show-stopper! This elegant example from @sugarsugarcakeschool also features another popular decorating trend – the use of geometric shapes. The M&M candy cake from I Sing In the Kitchen is a more whimsical version that would be so much fun for a child’s birthday. My Cupcake Addiction has a great tutorial on YouTube on how to make an illusion M&M cupcake.
