November Baker of the Month

Meet Debbie and Sandra – Siblings and owners of Sisters Sweet Shoppe, Sea Isle City, New Jersey.

In 2014, four sisters took a leap of faith and opened Sisters Sweet Shoppe in Sea Isle City, New Jersey. Busy lives and retirement took two of the sisters down different paths, leaving Debbie and Sandra to man the ovens and kettles.

Just blocks away from the Atlantic Ocean, Sisters Sweet Shoppe is a boutique destination for candies, custom cakes and cookies, caramel apples, and of course, salt water taffy! Debbie’s favorite treat to create is their hand-decorated cut-out sugar cookies. As you can see, her work is detailed and perfectly illustrates the celebrated occasion. Her skills are self-taught, but she also like to keep current on trends and techniques by participating in hands-on classes and online discussions.

While Debbie is hard at work on the cookies, Sandra is busy stirring up kettle-fresh fudge. If you aren’t familiar with kettle fresh fudge, you have been missing out! The process requires intense stirring and folding, and produces a rich, creamy fudge. Sandra cooks up a huge selection of flavors, including Vanilla Salted Caramel, Raspberry Vanilla Swirl, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and seasonal favorites like Pumpkin and Eggnog.

The countless hours spent stirring, folding, decorating, and mixing certainly pay off. Debbie and Sandra get immense joy watching their customers enjoy their handmade treats. With celebration cakes like these, it would be hard not to smile.

A baker’s life is a busy life, but spending time with their children and grandchildren is a priority for both Sandra and Debbie. Enjoying the outdoors, kayaking, softball games and or course, baking are just a few ways the sisters enjoy time with family. Being of German descent, the sisters recall their grandmother’s Stollen the most. German Stollen is a traditional spiced bread with nuts, spices, and dried or candied fruit. Being the eldest, Debbie was given the honor of helping Oma prepare the ingredients. Now, Debbie’s granddaughter and Sandra’s daughter are continuing the family’s love of creating delicious food, and even help in the shoppe.
